Your image file must be 680 to 1600 pixels by 175 pixels to fit the space allowed, so you may need to use a graphics editing program to adjust the size of your image. Google's Picasa 3 is a free compatible program for download that is available in both Windows and Mac versions. Picasa lets you enter the dimensions you need and adjusts the graphic for you. 2Stretch your graphics file to fit the space allowed. Download Google's Picasa 3 program if you don't have a graphics editing program. Open Picasa and upload the image you want to use. Double-click that image. A new screen will open. On the upper left corner under "Basic Fixes," select "Crop." Under "Crop photo" click the drop-down arrow and select "Add Custom Aspect Ratio." An Add Custom Aspect Ratio screen will open. At "Dimensions" enter 1600 x 175 and give the image a new name. Click "Apply." When the next screen opens, save it to a folder on your computer that you will be able to find later.
3Go to the Google themes page to add the image you have just edited. Find "Search for Themes" and "Create Your Own Theme" on the upper right side of the page. Click "Try Now." When the next screen opens, click "Upload an image." Click "From my Computer" and click "Browse." Find the image. Click "Upload." Highlight the width and height you want. Click "Select." The program will load it into the header area of your Google home page. Scroll down and add any other details you want, such as background color. Click "Apply." Your personal theme will be stretched across the top of your Google home page.
Google offers pre-measured graphic "themes" to fit the home page space. You won't have to stretch them. Go to the Google "themes" site and scroll down until you see the graphic you want and click "Add It Now."
There also are "themes" available from Google that background your whole screen, not just the header area. You will first need to download Google Chrome to install them.
